More about Beaver Creek
- Beaver Creek was conceived by a development group from nearby Vail, with the intention of creating a truly special resort destination. Billed as the “local's mountain” in the region, Beaver Creek Mountain features a long ski season (November to April) and an average annual snowfall of over 300 inches, making its 1600 acres of skiable terrain and 140-plus trails an attractive – even seductive – destination all season long. The natural beauty of Beaver Creek and the nearby villages of Arrowhead and Bachelor Gulch provide many leisure options no matter the season or weather. Diversions abound in this rugged corner of Vail Valley: book a “seat” on a hot air balloon and soar high over the Rockies, join up on horseback for a trip through White River National Forest, or even catch a Broadway-caliber show at the Vilar Center for the Arts. A resort community wouldn’t be complete without award-wining spas – many of the area's leading hotels offer deluxe spa packages. Rounding out the summer activities are challenging golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and Tom Fazio. They offer a variety of tough terrain elements, from large rock outcroppings and dense groves of trees to fairways carved into narrow ridges and others that feature dramatic elevation changes. In addition, if you can muster the energy, there’s great shopping, dining, and nightlife in Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead Villages, as well as the nearby towns of Edwards and Avon. Perhaps you’d better plan for a few extra days.
Beaver Creek Factoids - Fact 1: When it opened in February of 1998, the 530-seat Vilar Center made Beaver Creek the only resort community in the world able to boast its own performing arts facility. The state-of-the-art center, styled with respectful nods to Europe's great traditional theaters, draws a marvelous lineup of performers each season – artists who count Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center among their other stops.
Fact 2: Does something seem familiar about the name of Beaver Creek's big sister, Avon? No, it's not named after the famous cosmetic company. When the first European settlers arrived on the banks of Eagle River in 1874, they were amazed by how much the area reminded them of the Avon River Valley in Warwickshire, England. Thus, they named Avon to honor the river that flows through the birthplace of William Shakespeare ... "what's in a name" indeed!
Fact 3: By the numbers: Beaver Creek's base elevation is a "mere" 8100 feet above sea level – for those of you doing the math at home, that's almost a mile-and-a-half. If that's not high enough, the Mountain's summit reaches skyward just over 11,400 feet, or pretty darn near two miles high!
Fact 4: In 1997, Beaver Creek made headlines when it opened the village-to-village ski route, connecting its slopes with those of the nearby Bachelor Gulch resort (home to the Ritz-Carlton). Today, what once was a connector between two villages is now a link between three, as Arrowhead Village has joined the fray. Beaver Creek Mountain is now the only resort in the world that offers a true village-to-village-to-village skiing experience!
Fact 5: Modern-day skiers and snowboarders weren't the first folks to consider Beaver Creek a special place. The area's original settlers were Native Americans of the Ute Nation. In the 1970s, Beaver Creek Mountain was developed as a ski resort, a project spearheaded by a group from nearby Vail. Beaver Creek opened with much fanfare in 1980, and things in this corner of Vail Valley haven't been the same since.
Fact 6: With a vertical rise of 3340 feet and more than 300 inches of annual snowfall, the slopes of Beaver Creek Mountain are considered among the best in the Rockies, perhaps even in the world. If that's not enough to convince you, consider this: Beaver Creek Mountain also boasts more than 1600 acres of skiable terrain and more than 140 trails, ranging from beginner's slopes to expert runs (the longest of which is around 2.75 miles). With all that space, even on its busiest day, Beaver Creek never gets crowded!
Fact 7: A near-miss? When Beaver Creek was being developed in the 1970s, it was selected to host the 1976 Winter Olympics. However, Denver eventually won out as the site of that year's Games, postponing Beaver Creek's introduction to the world until its opening on 15 December 1980.
Fact 8: A top-flight vacation destination even when there's no snow, Beaver Creek is truly in season every season. Golfers, for example, have plenty of courses at their disposal, including ones designed by Greg Norman, Tom Fazio, and Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Of course, given each one's degree of difficulty, perhaps it would be better to say that golfers are at the courses' disposal!
Fact 9: Fortunately, you don't have to walk to the top of Beaver Creek Mountain to take in its spectacular panoramas, thanks to more than a dozen lifts. When all of the lifts are in operation during peak season, they transport some 25,000 skiers per hour to higher elevations safely, quickly, and with very few hassles.
Fact 10: In 1881, George Townsend became one of the first Europeans to settle the area. His wife, Allie, has long been referred to as the First Lady of Beaver Creek. She's also the namesake of the resort's popular Allie's Cabin, a rustic, mountainside, private restaurant.
